The largest Native American arts fair in Southern California, the Autry’s American Indian Arts Marketplace features 200 artists from more than 40 Native nations. Buy sculpture, pottery, beadwork, basketry, photography, paintings, jewelry, textiles, wooden carvings, mixed-media works, and more from top Native artists.
Please note that the 2020 American Indian Arts Marketplace will be transformed into a digital experience. Please read the statement from Autry President & CEO W. Richard West, Jr. (Southern Cheyenne) here. Check out the Autry website for updates. The Bead Society sponsored a trip to the Autry Museum a few years ago to see some amazing beadwork. It was the same day as the American Indian Arts Marketplace. It was great! We saw very interesting art, beadwork and jewelry from the vendors!

Wednesday August 5th, 7 pm via Zoom
There will be no business meeting at 6:30 pm. We will be having a Zoom gathering to talk about whatever people would like to talk about in the World of Beads! A few suggestions from Michele Manzella are: 1. Members’ preferred findings (could include beads), why they like them, what they find special/useful about them, where to get them. 2. Display concepts & items for jewelry & home arts. What seems to be most effective, and what doesn’t work. 3. Anything that members would like to sell or exchange or give away. We are instituting a security measure in Zoom with a passcode, Beads. Note that the B is capitalized. We will have to do this in the fall, so we may as well start now! If you click on the link in the email to members, you should be fine. If you go directly to Zoom, you just need these two pieces of info: Meeting ID: 899 883 2615 Passcode: Beads You can contact us if you have any questions! Our new website is live as of Friday, July 10th! Leslie Sears of LES is MORE Printing & Graphics, a great web designer from Hawaii worked on our website. We were able to move most of the information over to the new website!
It is now secure and has wonderful colors and it's flexible for us. Let me know what you think! We are looking for more articles for the News section! If you would like to submit articles for the News section, that would be great! We are also looking to have profiles of various members. That is a great way to connect with members since we are not able to meet in person right now. Send submissions here! The Wednesday June 3rd meeting focused on eye beads, symbols and jewelry. We had a lively discussion sharing information about Eye Beads of all sorts. We learned about Evil Eyes, bezeled glass eyes, large eyes in bezeled portraits, eye of Horus, and Tiger’s Eye gemstones. Join us again in July for the theme of Carnelian Beads! The Bead Society hosted the USA Premier of the film, African Twilight on June 5th, 2019. It was our last meeting of the year, as our year spans July through June. In addition to Bead Society members, we had many guests both local and all the way from Arizona. Alan Donovan, the executive producer and Chairman of the Murumbi Trust, African Heritage House was our host for the presentation. The film highlights the event held at the African Heritage House launching the two volume African Twilight book by Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher. The two have curated 750 color images of ceremonial events from over 150 tribes in 26 countries, 40% of which have already vanished The Bead Society has the DVDs of the movie available in our library. We have both the full two hour version and the one hour version. Contact Kay Deeney for more information Before you know it, the Bead Society's Fall Bead Bazaar will be right around the corner. We have added to our Social Media line up a bead bazaar microsite, so please take the time to check it out. Our site will continue to grow to share and give all kinds of Bead Bazaar information: www.culvercitybeadbazaar.com.
[Ed Note: The Bead Society is no longer using the above website for our Bead Bazaars. You will find updated information at https://www.beadsocietyla.org/bead-bazaar.html.] We have set up a library on a website called Library Thing. We are slowly adding books to the collection. Kay will bring about five books to each meeting that members can check out and bring back the following month.
The address of the website is: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/Bead_Society We have received donations of books from various members and in some cases, former members. Ann, the daughter of former member Helen Sjoberg, contacted us and gave us many of her mother’s books. At one time, the Bead Society was very engaged in helping members obtain interesting books about beads. Now, of course, we all have the internet! We have also purchased a few of the books, and some of our speakers such as Floor Kaspers from the Netherlands have donated copies of their books to us. Please visit the website and let us know if there is a book you would like to look at. If you’d like to help us input the other books, that would be wonderful. Email Kay. |
