Long time member, Yvonne Woods passed away in early February. Yvonne was a Bead Society Manager of Bead Bazaars for several years. She also served as a Secretary of the Society in 2018-19. She was one of the Bead Society's most consistent volunteers. She helped out at the Pop Ups, Bead Bazaars and at the recent Parking Lot events. She was pleasant and personable, and great to work with. Yvonne will be remembered for always matching jewelry colors to fashion items that she wore. She would make necklaces to wear with her outfits. One of my favorite necklaces that Yvonne wore is one that was a series of colorful beads that looked like marbles. Yvonne will be sorely missed by members of the Bead Society and her family. Thanks to Sylvia Humphrey, Lisa Shatts, Tim Meikle and Kay Deeney for pictures and text.

The Bead Society presents the 2nd annual Black History Month presentations by local artists on February 1st. Since February is Black History Month, what better way to celebrate it than by presenting artists who bring us African American beads, jewelry and other art! The event is hosted by Sylvia Humphrey. Our presenters will demonstrate various genres of artwork, some have multiple areas. Two of our presenters participated last year and this year they are teaching our younger generation their art skills and knowledge. This can be very impactful in so many ways on a young person's life journey. We hope to see you next Wednesday, Feb 1st at 7 pm. See the slide show above for a previews of some pictures from our Artists. Eddie Stokes, Sandra Sherman Designs, and Regina Higgins-Rainmaker will be joining the panel.

Thanks to Sylvia for coordinating this topic and all the panelists! The January 4th online program meeting will feature Terry Henry, a glass artist! Terry will show a movie on how she makes her Northern lights or Galaxy bead and how she makes her floral components. From her bio, Terry started out as a geologist and hydrologist. "I have travelled to Italy twice to take flameworking classes and appreciate the beauty and history of Italy. I have traveled to New Zealand, taught at Fenton Glass Factory in West Virginia, and have exhibited and taught in Tucson, Arizona for the last 9 years. For the past 6 years I have traveled to Canada to participate and instruct at the Molten Experience. I believe working on the edge had been the biggest factor in my ability to grow as an artist." See the pictures above and below, and prepare to be wowed! Terry will also be at the Pasadena Bead & Design Show at the Hilton Pasadena starting on January 6-8, 2023. Her website is Terry Henry Glassworks. Wednesday Jan 4th, 7 pm Pacific Time Zoom Meeting ID: 899 883 2615, Passcode: Beads All are welcome! Business meeting at 6:30 pm PT at the same Zoom address! The Holiday Party of the Bead Society was last Saturday at El Cholo Restaurant on Western Avenue in Los Angeles. Twenty people came to celebrate with us. It was a pleasant event partaking in Mexican food and visiting with Bead Society members and friends. The room was nicely decorated. The staff at the restaurant were very responsive. Tim Meikle brought frog treats for all. And members received little treat bags from the Society. One attendee wrote me later, I just want to tell you, Thank you very, very, much for your invitation to yesterday's BSLA holiday lunch. I enjoyed the afternoon, and all of the "Beaders," (and the food, too.) Earlier you said, "Beads just don't keep a person warm." Might be, but yesterday, I felt a lot of warmth from all of the BEADERS. It was great to gather together again. We have only seen many members in person during the Bead Bazaar in September and the Holiday Pop Up in Novermber. It is just different from meeting via online sessions! See the pictures below from the Holiday party. We wish everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! This is the official first meeting of the year, so it's a great time to join the Bead Society! See you there! We recently received a message from Ken Rogers:
"Every Sunday morning I record a (favorite) TV program, "CBS Sunday Morning". I just played it back and the program had a segment named, "Women's Work": Art by women, known and unknown. It is about an art exhibit in the Lyndhurst Mansion Museum, Terrytown, N.Y. The exhibit included pieces going back a few hundred years, along with contemporary women artists. Beads were/are an important medium of women artists. The program segment included: a beaded toilet & toilet paper; a beaded can of beaded candy; a large "rotting Lemon", etc. If you're interested in "Women's Work" and beads, I suggest you might find this "CBS Sunday Morning" segment online." The rotting beaded lemon by Kathleen Ryan is particularly impressive! Google led me to a number of her works of rotting fruit. Who whould have thought! Thanks, Ken, for alerting us to this interesting video about this exhibit in New York. Check it out! The Bead Society June program will focus on Found Objects as Alternative Jewelry Components. Think nuts & bolts, gears, carabiners, springs, keys, toys and other unusual objects! It will be a sharing session! Bring some of your unusual bracelets, necklaces, etc. that you have made or discovered with alternate parts. All are welcome!
