"Prehistoric Mosaic Jewelry
of the American Southwest"
As featured in Ornament Magazine Volume 30, Number 2

Join our long-time friend Robert K. Liu, coeditor of Ornament Magazine as he discusses natural materials such as spondylus shells and other marine molluscs  that were highly valued and  were traded between Ecuador and West Mexico as well as  what is now Arizona.   Beautiful shell material has been used with turquoise , which is another treasured jewelry element that was traded widely.

Please come and see Robert's wonderful photographs of the charming mosaic pieces made by the ancients of the southwest, and hear about various aspects of their lore.  This promises to be a wonderful program.

"Moche Beads from Ancient Peru"
Featuring Christopher B. Donnan (from UCLA)

Christopher Donnan of UCLA is an archeologist who has done a lot of field work in Peru.  He wrote the book ROYAL TOMBS OF SIPAN with Walter Alva, and he gave a lecture to The Bead Society on this subject in about 1993.   The ancient jewelry is absolutely spectacular.

Moche civilization flourished on the north coast of Peru between approximately AD 100 and 800 (CD1). Although the Moche had no writing system, they left a vivid artistic record of their beliefs and activities in beautifully modeled and painted ceramic vessels, remarkable objects of gold, silver, and copper, sumptuous textiles, and carved and inlaid bone, wood, and stone. Using gold, silver, shell, and semi precious stones, they made beads and assembled them into pectorals, bracelets, and necklaces.

By examining the way these are depicted in Moche art, and studying examples that have been excavated in Moche tombs, it is possible to reconstruct how the Moche made beads and used them to create some of the finest jewelry in the ancient world.
